I.Approach
Editor's note

A theatre musician
who happens to play
the guitar.

I have never considered myself a guitarist performing in theatre. I consider myself a theatre musician whose instrument happens to be the guitar.

Working in musical theatre taught me that every note serves the story. Technique matters. Sound matters. Preparation matters. But none of them matters more than understanding the emotional arc of a scene and supporting the actors, the director and the production.

Rock music gave me my musical language. Theatre taught me how to use it.

II.Why RENT

One production I still hadn't lived.

I've been fortunate enough to perform in many of the productions every musical theatre guitarist dreams of.

Ironically, RENT wasn't one of them.

The only time I played this score was with a small independent company that simply wanted to keep Jonathan Larson's work alive.

Years later, after returning to the stage, I realised there was still one production I would genuinely love to experience with every resource, every rehearsal, and every artistic possibility it deserves.

This is that production.

Story

Professional debut at the age of twenty-three. I joined the production without a single rehearsal call after preparing the entire book on my own, and travelled from Mallorca for every performance. The chair asked me to move between the pit and the stage on the same night — two very different rooms, one score.

Highlights
  • Cover for Guitar 2, both pit and on-stage
  • Prepared the full book independently before the first call
  • Commuted from Mallorca for every performance

LIVE PERFORMANCE

The Bohemian Rhapsody guitar solo performed within the production. The moment when the guitar briefly becomes a character of its own before returning to the pit.

Story

From the first rehearsal to the final night of the tour. Nearly five hundred performances under the musical supervision of Simon Lee and the musical direction of Xavier Torras, performing a score where the guitar is the beating heart of the orchestra. This was the production that became my real graduation.

Highlights
  • Approx. 500 performances across the national tour
  • Full rehearsal process through end of run
  • Musical supervision by Simon Lee

LIVE PERFORMANCE

The final night of the tour. A recording of the room saying goodbye, not of a solo. This is the sound of a company that has lived inside the same score for two years.

Story

One of the most demanding orchestral books I have ever prepared as a guitarist. Idiom shifts arrive without warning and every section switch has to land clean the first time it is read.

Highlights
  • Cover chair on a technically dense orchestration
  • Rapid style-switching across the score

Story

A workshop staging with the band placed inside the world of the play. The guitar was written as a character, not as accompaniment, and the chair sat in the eye-line of the actors throughout.

Story

The first production I took on purely for the love of the show. Depending on the venue the guitar lived on stage with the cast or in the pit with the band — the arrangement was written to survive both, and so was the player.

Highlights
  • On-stage and pit configurations, tour by tour
  • First project undertaken for the love of the piece

Story

A concert built around the leading male voices of Spanish musical theatre. The band was small; the responsibility was not. Repertoire moved between rock, pop, ballad and full theatre — often within the same number.

Highlights
  • Concert format supporting four lead vocalists
  • Cross-idiom guitar chair — rock, pop, theatre

Approximately one hundred and fifty performances of a score that lives at the border of rock band and pit orchestra. High-gain textures, tight cues, and a cast that plays the comedy at the tempo the band sets.

Story

Personally recruited by Musical Director Xavier Torras for the final Madrid season, after five years away from the industry. A pop score played with the discipline of a theatre pit — the guitar carries the rhythmic architecture without ever pulling focus.

IV.Life Between Shows

A few pages from the other archive.

Musical theatre has always been the thread running through my career, but never the only one. Between productions there have always been recordings, songwriting, concerts, rehearsal rooms, radio sessions, programming, late-night editing, friendships and the quiet work that keeps a musician growing.

These are simply a few pages from that archive.
